Q.1 What peculiar things does Derry notice about the old man, Mr Lamb ? (2008,2014)
or
What is special about Mr. Lamb?
Ans. There are many peculiar things that Derry finds about Mr. Lamb. Derry finds that he leaves his gate always open. Everybody is welcome in his garden. Also there are no blinds on the windows. Though children tease him by calling 'Lamey-Lamb' but he does not mind.

Q.2.Why does Mr Lamb leave his gate always open ? (2011)
Ans. Mr Lamb leaves his gate always person because he is a lonely person. He wants people to come to his garden and talk to him. Everyone is welcome to come in his garden.

Q.3. Why does Derry tell Mr Lamb that he is afraid of seeing himself in the mirror in the play, 'On the Face of It'? (2009) 
Ans. Derry is a boy of fourteen years of age. One side of his face has burnt due to fall of acid. Now he looks very ugly in his face. People always kept reminding him of his burnt face. Once a woman looked at him and said that that was a face only a mother could love. That is why Derry says that he is afraid of seeing himself in the mirror.

Q.4. What qualities of Mr Lamb attracted Derry to him? (2009)
Ans. Mr. Lamb didn't show any shock when he saw Derry’s burnt face. Instead he encouraged Derry to face the world bravely. All this attracted Derry towards Mr. Lamb

Q.5. How does Mr Lamb keep himself busy when it is a bit cool ? (2012)
Ans. When it is a bit cool, Mr Lamb gets a ladder and a stick and busies himself by pulling down the crab apples in the garden. They are ripe for picking.

Q.6. If you were to give a different ending to the story, 'On the Face of It’, how would you end it? (2013) 
Ans. If I were to give a different ending to this story, I would have kept the character of Mr. Lamb alive. Mr. Lamb was a man with a positive attitude towards life and people. He had tried to change Derry's perspective towards life and people. So he could prove a good companion as well as a guide for Derry.

Q.7 What do the people talk about Derry? (Imp.)
Ans. People are much scared of Derry's burnt face. They pass unpleasant remarks. Some say, “That is a terrible thing.” Some call him a poor boy. A woman looks at him says “That is a face only a mother could love.” All this causes Derry a lot of pain and he has developed negative views about life.

Q.8. What does Mr. Lamb mean when he says there is same life growing everywhere? (Expected) Ans. Mr Lamb has become a worldly wise with experience of life. He considers flowers and weeds having the same life. He tells Derry that he is an old man with a tin leg. On the other hand, Derry is young with the burnt face. Derry is standing and Mr. Lamb is sitting. He says that basically there is no difference in them. It is the same life growing everywhere.

Q.9. What is the story associated with the man locked up himself in a room and never leaves it? (Imp.) 
Ans. There was a man who was always afraid of everything in this world. He thought that anything could happen to him. He might be either run over by a bus or might be infected with deadly germs of another man. Even a donkey might kick him to death. Lightning might strike him down or he might slip on a banana peel. So he always locked himself into a room. One day a picture fell off the wall on his head and killed him.

Q.10. How does people try to console Derry time and again ? (V.V. Imp.) 
Ans. Derry finds people staring at him due to his ugly face. He becomes fearful. But they often ask him to look at those who are in pain and brave. He must think of them who never cry and complain and show respect over themselves. He must think about them who are worse than him. He is better than the blind, deaf, lame, crazy and dribble.

Q.11. How does the conversation with Mr. Lamb affect Derry's views about his life and the world ?

How does Mr. Lamb try to remove the baseless fears of Derry ? (CBSE Outside 2008)
Ans. Derry's conversation with Mr. Lamb has a great effect on Derry. He realizes that he should not confine himself. Rather he should come out in the world. He should see the world, face it and emerge as a winner. Now he wants to live, he wants to forget about his ugly face, and makes his own wishes and his priorities. His life is more important than the views of other people about his face and life.

Q.12. What did Derry's mother think of Mr Lamb ? (2009) 
Ans. Derry's mother does not have a good opinion about Mr Lamb. She thought of Mr Lamb as a worthless person. She said that Lamb's all talk was nothing but nonsense. She didn't want Derry to go back to him.
