The Adventure

2 3

Q.1. Explain the statement, "You neither travelled to the past, nor the future. You were in the present experiencing a different world."

Ans. Prof. Gaitonde was able to experience two worlds at one time. The one is where he is now and the other where he spent two days. The separation took place at the Battle of Panipat. He made the transition to the other world because at the time of his collision with the truck he was thinking about catastrophe theory and its role in war.

Q.2. Explain the statement: "You have passed through a fantastic experience; or more correctly, a catastrophic experience."

Ans. At the time of his collision with the truck, Prof.Gaitonde was thinking of the role of catastrophic theory in the war. So his mind travelled to the past at the time of the Battle of Panipat. This was his catastrophic experience.

Q.3. Explain the statement, "Gangadharpant could not help comparing the country he knew with what he was witnessing around him."

Ans. The train stops at small station called Sarhad. He sees an Anglo-Indian checking the tickets. A fellow' messenger on the train tells him that now the British Raj area has begun. Prof. Gaitonde wondered that this India was different from the India he has known. He did not know that the British were still in India.

Q.4. Explain the statement, ‘The lack of determinism in quantum theory.’

Ans. According to the quantum theory light consists of tiny particles of energy that behave like waves. But these particles are not determined or fixed. No one knows in which direction a particular atom or its part will travel. This is lack of determinism.

Q.5. Explain the statement, “You need some interaction to cause a transition."

Ans. Sometimes, and it happens very rarely, the two worlds may interact with each other. Or we can say that a person may make a transition from one world to the other. This is exactly what happened in case of Prof. Gaitonde. He was able to experience two worlds at one time. The one is where he is now and the other where he spent two days. The interaction was caused on the account of the Battle of Panipat.

Q.6. What does the writer want to prove in this story?

Ans. This is a fantasy. This story is based on the catastrophe theory. The writer wants to prove that sometimes, due to a catastrophe, a person's mind may go into the past. Then he may look at the past not from the real historical point of view but from his own personal point of view.

ESSAY TYPE QUESTION

Q. Write a summary of the lesson 'The Adventure'.
Ans. The lesson 'The Adventure' is a fantasy. In this lesson, the writer wants to say that sometimes, due to a catastrophe, a person's mind may go back in history. Then although he is physically in the present time, his mind moves into the past, Prof. Gaitonde is a professor of history. One day he collides with a truck. At the time of collision he was thinking about the Battle of Panipat. He was thinking if the Marathas had won the battle, the course of history would have been different. As an effect of the collision, his mind goes back to the past. His mind sees the changed history in which the Marathas actually won the battle. His friend Rajendra Deshpande helps him and brings his mind to the present. He also explains to him the whole position.
