Q. 1. What was the dream of Sadao's father ? How did Sadao realize it ? (2015) 
Ans. Sadao's father had dreamt to see his son as a highly educated man. Sadao went to America to learn all he could about surgery and medicine. He became famous not only as a surgeon, but as a scientist also. In this way he realised his father's dream. 

Q. 2. Why was Sadao not sent to the battlefield ? (2009) 
Ans. Sadao was a famous surgeon and scientist. He was perfecting a discovery that could render wounds entirely clean. Moreover, the old General was ill and Sadao was treating him medically. The General could need an operation any time. That was why Sadao was not sent abroad with the troops. 

Q.3. What role did the American professor play in bringing Hana and Sadao together? (2015) 
Ans. Sadao went to America for his further studies of surgery and medicine. There he stayed at the house of Mr Harley who was an American professor. A few other foreign students also lived there. There Sadao met Hana and fell in love with her. But he married her only when he was sure that she was a Japanese. 

Q. 4. How does the writer indicate that Dr Sadao's father was a very traditional and conventional man ? (2011) 

Ans. Sadao’s father never played or joked with his son. He was always worried about Sadao’s education. Moreover, he accepted Hana as his daughter-in-law only when he found that she was of the pure Japanese race. He arranged the marriage in the old Japanese way. All this shows that he was very traditional and conventional.

Ans. Dr Sadao found the American soldier on the seashore in a dying state. He was wounded and the sand on one side of him had a stain of blood soaking through. He lay motionless. His face was in the sand. He was in wet rags. An old cap stuck to his head.

Ans. Hana remembered that the General used to beat his wife at home very cruelly. A terrible image of this man rose in her mind. She thought if a man could be so cruel to a woman in his power, how cruel he could be to the helpless prisoners of war! 

Q.7. Why did the General spare the American soldier ? (2009) 
Ans. In fact the General did not spare the American soldier. He had only forgotten about the soldier as he was in great pain and had to be operated on. 

Q.8. How did Hana feel on seeing he messenger in official uniform? What did the messenger come for?

Ans. The messenger had come to Dr. Sadao's house to inform him that the old General was in pain again and had to be attended to. On seeing the messenger, Hana was too frightened to say a word. She turned pale with fear. She thought the man had come to arrest them. Her hands went weak and she could not draw her breath.  

Q.9. How did Dr Sadao ensure that the American sailor left his house but he himself remained safe and secure ? (2011) 
Ans. Dr. Sadao slept well during the night, the man escaped as per the plan. One evening, standing on the varandah, Dr. Sadao looked towards the island. There was no signal of the flashlight. It meant that the man had gone, safe on a Koren fishing boat. In this was Dr. Sadao ensured that the American sailor left his house but he himself remained safe and secure  

Q.10. What forced Dr Sadao to be impatient and irritated with his patient? (2010, 13) 
Ans. First the servants of the house had refused to work while the American soldier was being kept hidden in the house. Then there was the danger of Sadao himself being arrested. Moreover Hana started vomiting during the operation at the sight of the bollo. Dr. Sadao wanted to help her but he could not leave his patient. All these things made Sadao impatient and irritated with his patient.

Q. 11 Why did Dr. sSadao treat the American soldier even though it was an unpatriotic act on his part?
Ans. Dr. Sadao treated the American soldier because as a doctor he was rained to save lives. He could not have let teh American soldier let die even though he was his enemy, as that would have been against hi professional ethics.

Q. 12. How did hana help Dr. Sadao?
Ans. Hana was an impeccable wife and stood by her husband in all his decisions. She helped Dr Sadao when he was operating upon the enemy. She also nursed and washed the prisoner herself when the servants refused to do so. 

Q. 13. Why dd the General not order immediate arrest of Dr. Saao who had sheltered a white man? (2014)
Ans. The General was not ususally in good health. He did not believe in other surgeons but Dr Sadao. He could have nedded his services any time. That was why he did not order immediate arrest of Dr. Saao for sheltering a white man?
