ARTICLES
Articles are very important words in English and so is their knowledge. Articles are used before only nouns to limit or definite their uses to the context of the sentence. They impart effectiveness and accuracy to the nouns. Infect articles are used as demonstrative adjectives and determiners before nouns. There are two kinds of articles;
1 Indefinite articles --- a, an (in the sense of one, any)
2 Definite articles Indefinite articles ---the (in the sense of ‘this’ and ‘that’)
The use of definite article is more restricted whereas the use of indefinite article is less restricted. But the study of article is not limited to Definite or Indefinite articles, the study of Zero article is also necessary where use of any article is restricted.
Since articles precede a noun it is useful to classify the noun of appropriate articles:
A Classification of Nouns:
Countable Nouns ---- (i) Singular (ii) Plural
Uncountable Nouns --- (i) common (ii) Abstract (iii) Material
Non-identified : (i) Countable singular and plural (iii) Uncountable
According to above classification, the possible use of articles is given as under:
(i) Countable singular Noun, Non-identified:- a / an; as - A cow is grazing in the field.
(ii) Countable plural Noun, Non-identified:- zero; as - Cows are animals.
(iii) Countable singular or plural Nouns, But identified: the; as -
The cows /cow in the ground belong/s to Shyam.
(iv) Uncountable and Non-identified (including Proper, Abstract and Material Nouns):
zero; as- He likes wine/ music/chess etc.
(v) Uncountable, Identified:- the; as- The milk in this jug is pure.
The use of indefinite articles “A /An”
a) A is used before a word beginning with a consonant: a boy, a student, a child

B Identification of Nouns
Identified: (i) Countable singular and plural (ii) Uncountable Non-identified : (i) Countable singular and plural (iii) Uncountable
According to above classification, the possible use of articles is given as under:
(i) Countable singular Noun, Non-identified:- a / an; as - A cow is grazing in the field.

RULES OF ARTICLES
a) A is used before a word beginning with a consonant: a boy, a student, a child
b) A is used before a word beginning with a vowel giving the sound of a consonant: a one eyed man (giving the sound /v/ (consonant), a European (giving the sound /yo../ (consonant), a uniform (giving the sound /yo.../ (consonant).
c) ‘An’ is used before a word beginning with a vowel: an elephant, an ass, an egg.
d) ‘An’ is used before a word beginning with a mute ‘h’:- an hour, an heir, an honest man, an historical building etc.
e) ‘An’ is used with a consonant pronounced with the sound of a vowel:- an L.L.B. student, an M.A., an M.L.A., an X-ray etc.
f) Before Singular countable noun which represents any class of person or thing and which is mentioned for the first time:
d) ‘An’ is used before a word beginning with a mute ‘h’:- an hour, an heir, an honest man, an historical building etc.
e) ‘An’ is used with a consonant pronounced with the sound of a vowel:- an L.L.B. student, an M.A., an M.L.A., an X-ray etc.
f) Before Singular countable noun which represents any class of person or thing and which is mentioned for the first time:
- A cow is a useful animal.
- A camel has a hump.
- A cider tree is usually very tall.
- Hari is lazy boy.
- Ashoka was a great king.
i) Before a proper noun used as a common noun:
Five rupees a kilo, ten kilometers an hour, half a page,
k) A /an represents a weakened form of preposition ‘in’

n) Before the verbs used as nouns: for a swim, for a visit, for a talk, for a drink
o) Before the words denoting numbers: a hundred, a dozen, a million.
p) Before certain phrases: have a taste, have a mind, have a pain, take a fancy, make a noise, in a hurry, a pity, feel a shame, tell a lie etc.
q) Before the name of the profession:
- A Yudhister lives in our neighbour (a truthful person).
- He is a Vikramaditya known for his fairness (a just man)
- We need a n Arjuna in an archery today. (a skilled archer)

- He earns 50000 rupees (in) a year.

NO – ‘A/ AN’
(i) Before plural nouns like: cows, birds, dogs, animals, boys, story books, etc. - Cows give milk
- Dogs are animals
- Birds are flying.
- Boys like story-books.
- This is Hari Today is Monday
- We live in India. She came in March
- Patna is in Bihar. Delhi is a city.
- Milk is good for us. Money is honey.
- We like tea without sugar Gold is yellow.
- A cup of coffee a bottle of ink
- A glass of water. A bag of rice.
- A knowledge of language is always useful.
- He has good knowledge of maths.
- We write on paper. Windows are made of glass
- I have a yard of cloth. Iron is a metal.

USE OF DEFINITE ARTICLE 'THE'
‘The’ is called ‘definite article’ because it is used before a definite person, place or thing; as: - a teacher: means - any teacher
- an elephant: means -any elephant
- I saw the teacher: means some particular teacher.
The definite article ‘the’ is used:-

- A stranger came to a village and the people of the village gave the stranger shelter.

- This is the house which Mohan bought last year.
- The man on the platform is my uncle
- The sun rises in the east and sets in the west
- The cow is a sacred animal.

- The son should be obedient. (यहाँ पर the का प्रयोग गलत है क्योंकि किस person से पहले the का प्रयोग पूरी जाति का बोध नहीं करता)

- The cows are economically useful. (Delete ‘the’)
We do not use ‘the’ before ‘man’ and ‘woman’ to describe the whole race:
(iii) the television (as an invention)
(iv) He was watching television. (television is used just as set)
(v) He was listening to the Radio.
